Located on the main street in tiny Marfa, Texas, Hotel Paisano is a charming, stylish 41-room hotel that creatively plays up its historic roots. Along with gorgeous Spanish mission-inspired decor and many original features, including wooden floors and exposed ceiling beams, the hotel houses a collection of memorabilia and photographs from the movie GIANT. The Oscar-winning film was shot in the area and 300 members of the cast and crew, including Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean, and Rock Hudson, called the hotel home for six weeks during production.
Hotel Paisano hits an almost-perfect balance of elegance and intimacy. It's polished and pretty enough to daydream about having a wedding under the stars in the Spanish-style courtyard, but relaxed enough to curl up in an armchair with a drink in your favorite pair of jeans. The hotel's on-site restaurant, Jett's Grill, is one of the most popular spots in town and offers dishes like pistachio-fried steak and hands-down the best margarita in Marfa (and maybe West Texas). It's also the perfect spot for people watching and getting a sense of the wonderfully eclectic clientele — both Marfa and the hotel are home to a delightful mix of hardcore cowboys and cutting-edge artists.
Hotel Paisano offers a diverse range of rooms and suites, each with their own unique layout and character. Many of the suites also give you the opportunity to stay in a room where one of the stars of GIANT stayed. The Elizabeth Taylor Suite (where I stayed) featured a spacious living room, dining room, and efficiency kitchen with french doors that opened onto balconies overlooking the central courtyard. The Rock Hudson Suite, across the hall, has a fireplace and a large rooftop terrace that is perfect for parties. The Mezzanine Patio Rooms are also amazing, with a private walled patio and outdoor fireplace. All rooms feature complimentary Wi-Fi, pillow-top mattresses, a flat-screen TV, upscale toiletries, and bottled water.
Driving into quirky Marfa, Texas, the Hotel Paisano's beautiful Spanish mission-style architecture is immediately impressive. Located right on one of the main streets in Marfa (although there aren't many of them in this town of 2,000 people), the hotel has a great view of the historic Presidio County Courthouse and is within strolling distance of the town's galleries and museums.
