Built in 1905, Hotel Hornsgatan is a 22-room hotel located on the first floor of a residential building in the heart of Södermalm. While the downstairs entry doesn't really wow, once you enter the hotel it feels like being in a friend's cozy Swedish home. The interior is immaculate and features simple, Scandinavian design with bright yellow walls and pops of color. There's a communal dining room where guests are served an ample European breakfast that includes fresh fruit, cheese, salami, eggs, and pastries. It's also kept stocked with coffee, tea, juice, and delicious Swedish cakes so you can have a traditional fika (Swedish afternoon tea) or midnight snack.

The staff are exceptionally friendly and outgoing, and enthusiastically ask about your plans and interests so they can help ensure you make the most out of your stay in Stockholm. They happily worked with us to plan our itinerary, provided a map, and highlighted the best routes and not-to-be-missed streets. They also accommodated an early check-in and late check-out.

Twin rooms, suitable for two travelers, are generously sized and spacious with lots of natural light, gorgeous moldings, handy work desks, and free wifi. Rooms overlook either a quiet courtyard or the street - we didn't hear a peep of street noise despite it being a major thoroughfare. While rooms with a private bathroom are available, most come with a shared bathroom and shower located down the corridor. There are plenty of bathrooms available (I never had to wait for one) and they're kept completely spotless.

The best part of a stay here is, without a doubt, the location. Situated in stylish Södermalm, a neighborhood made internationally famous by Stieg Larsson's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, you're steps away from plenty of great bars, restaurants, and shopping. There's a metro stop right around the corner, Old Town is a scenic 10 minute walk, and the ferry to the Vasa Museum and Skansen are also easily accessible.
