The 6 Best Summer Cafés in Helsinki

The best summer cafés in Helsinki creatively combine Finland's coffee culture and glorious summer weather.

In the land of the Midnight Sun, there's no better way to soak up the long summer days than dining al fresco on a pretty terrace. Here are my top picks for the summer cafés with the best brews and views in Helsinki!

Café Birgitta

Perched beside the sea, Café Birgitta is the perfect spot to grab a coffee and sweet treat or beer and burger (their burgers are some of the best in Helsinki). The atmosphere is buzzy and hip, with a chic glass and wood building that was designed to be transparent and active in every direction. It is a bit of a trek from the city center, but an afternoon spent watching the sailboats makes it well worth it. As a bonus, you also get to see some of Helsinki's newly redeveloped waterfront. Café Birgitta almost always has a line snaking out the door, but rest assured it moves fairly quickly and you rarely have to wait long before snatching a table.

Café Ursula

Founded in 1952, Café Ursula is a lovely, elegant seaside café that offers a glimpse of Suomenlinna (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) across the water. They have a great seasonal lunch menu that is updated weekly (think: wild mushroom soup or smoked salmon) and special jazz evenings if you're looking for a romantic date night spot. The best part? You can always feel good about eating here because proceeds go toward organizations that support women, children, and the elderly.

Café Regatta

If there were an award for cutest café in Helsinki, Café Regatta would surely win. Its cozy country-cottage atmosphere just oozes charm. Get sausages to roast over the outdoor fireplace, a cinnamon bun (korvapuusti in Finnish), and a traditional Finnish riisipiirakka with egg butter. And don’t forget the coffee! While it isn’t the fanciest coffee you’ll find in Helsinki, you earn 5 cents back every time you get a refill, so drink up!

Taideterassi is housed in a 19th century villa that sits high on a rocky outcrop overlooking Töölönl̈ahti Bay. The peaceful, intimate garden patio provides sweeping views of the water and is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Their baked goods are among some of the best, and 5 euro gets you a cup of coffee and a delicious piece of blueberry pie. Bring a book and settle in!

Sinisen Huvilan Kahvila

This beloved café ties with its neighbor, Taideterassi, for the best location in Helsinki. It offers panoramic views of Töölönl̈ahti and some of Helsinki's most iconic buildings, including Alvar Aalto's spectacular Finlandia Hall and the Ooppera House. On a sunny day, it seems like there's nowhere locals would rather be. Take a break from your stroll around the bay and indulge in a quintessentially Finnish summer treat: a cup of coffee and ice cream.

Kahvila Tyyni

A third favorite on the banks of Töölönl̈ahti, this café feels more lively than its counterparts across the water. Its location next to a small beach and dock gives it a friendly, beachy vibe. Watch the ducks and adorable baby swans while you fuel up on coffee and a cinnamon bun. When you're finished, head over to the dock to get some sun or try your luck out on the water on one of the ubiquitous SUP boards.
